Newtongrange Silver Band’s recent British title win in Blackpool was only part of what has been a great year for them.

Their capture of the British Brass Band Championship Senior Trophy was just their latest piece of 2013 silverware.

The band, who are currently top of the second tier of brass bands, qualified for the British Open in Cheltenham this September by winning the Scottish contest in March.

Band secretary Jackie Fraser picked out a new conductor as one reason for their successful year.

She said: “We had a very good conductor who is an army guy, he gelled them well together. But he has left.

“We now have Lee Skipsey, he started in the Salvation Army and he is a new up and coming conductor. The latest big one on the scene.

“He is going places. He has taken a few bands to the top of the league so we are happy to have him. He is really good.”
