The initiative aimed at reviving Penicuik’s town centre into a vibrant hub for businesses and shoppers has reached an important stage.

Ballot papers were sent out earlier this week calling on local firms to back the business plan for turning the town centre into a Business Improvement District.

Spearheaded by the Penicuik First steering committee, the BIDs project is keen to turn round the fortunes of the precinct, High Street, Bridge Street and parts of John Street.

Project co-ordinator Edward Linton-Smith said: “Penicuik’s town centre will always be the heart of our community, but it must adapt to survive. Online commerce and retail parks aren’t going anywhere, but Penicuik First is ready to fight back.”

The BIDs ballot closes on May 27
