Protestors erupted with fury at the close of a planning committee meeting after councillors approved plans for an opencast mine near Howgate.
Shouts of “shame on you” were directed at nine elected members who had supported applicant Hargreaves’ bid to extract 10 million tonnes of coal from the site at Cauldhall Moor.
Councillors Alex Bennett (Lab) and Ian Baxter (Green) made cases for and against the proposal respectively, while councillor Peter de Vink (Ind) moved that a decision be delayed and that the council employ an independent consultant to evaluate the project.
