Religious leaders in Penicuik have joined forces to condemn Midlothian Council’s move to slash the funding to the town’s YMCA-YWCA.

Rev Ruth Halley (Penicuik North Kirk), Rev Ian Cathcart (Penicuik South Church), Rev Linsay Downs (St James the Less Church) and Rev Hugh Davidson (St Mungo’s Church) have written an open letter to councillors urging them to reconsider.

The Y is to lose £37,000 over three years – cash which is used to meet running costs.

In their letter the ministers say: “We are dismayed that this cut in critical support puts at risk much-needed and unique services for children, young people and families.”

Council leader Councillor Owen Thompson (SNP) said: “We have met, and will continue to meet with the Penicuik YMCA in a bid to cement new ways of working with it that would serve local communities and make sure the YMCA has a positive future ahead.”
