A SOLDIER active in the Penicuik community has been killed in Afghanistan.
Captain Walter Barrie (41), from The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (1 SCOTS), was shot in an ‘insider attack’ in Helmand Province on Sunday.
He was taking part in a football match between British soldiers and members of the Afghan National Army at his base in the Nad-e Ali district when he was shot at close range by a member of the Afghan Army.
After being commissioned in 2009, he became Unit Welfare Officer of 2 SCOTS based at Glencorse Barracks and was the battalion’s liaison with the local community.
