Penicuik siblings die in air crash

Investigations are continuing into a Florida plane crash, which killed a Penicuik brother and sister.

Student pilot Carly Beattie (21) and her 24-year-old brother Daniel died when their light aircraft, a Cessna 152, crashed in a wooded area near Blue Cypress Lake on Thursday June 9.

The alarm was raised at 8pm when the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office received a report that the plane, chartered by the siblings, was overdue.

Carly was a second year student of Air Transport with Commercial Pilot Training at Buckinghamshire New University and had travelled to America to complete her training having obtained her private pilot’s licence.

Her parents Elaine and Thomas, a retired local pharmacist, and brother Daniel were visiting from Penicuik.

A co-ordinated effort is under way by the American authorities to provide support to the family.
