A Penicuik teenager has launched a fundraising campaign after being touched by the plight of an African mother and her six children.
Former Beeslack student Charlotte Smith contacted the Advertiser from Malawi where she is in the middle of a four month volunteering project.
Working with the Urunji Child-Care Trust, Charlotte (18) has been helping local women in the Lilongwe district become financially independent and out of poverty.
She added: “I have also met one family whose story has touched me so much that I felt I had to do something extra.
“The family, Chipililo Mazikoti and her six children, are living in very poor conditions since the husband left.”
