In what was a year full of drama, 1912 saw the Titanic sink in the North Atlantic and explorer Scott lead the fatal mission to the South Pole.

Meanwhile, on April 18, Marion Degnan (nee Flockhart) was born at Oakbank, Straiton.

Last week Mrs Degnan was joined by family and friends as she celebrated her 100th birthday at Thornlee Nursing Home, Loanhead.

She received a telegram from The Queen and a letter of congratulations from the First Minister Alex Salmond.

Mrs Degnan was the third eldest of eight children – Emily, Alex, Chris, Tam, Andrew, Joe and Nessie. Nessie (85) and husband Jim Blair live in Penicuik.

She attended Burdiehouse School and on her last day, pupils were informed by their teacher that a princess, who would later become Queen Elizabeth, had been born.
