Police appeal after fatal road accident

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 66-year-old man and his dog died in a road traffic collision west of Penicuik last night (Tuesday, September 8).

Emergency services were alerted to the A702 near to the Flotterstone Inn at around 6pm.

The man had been walking his dog heading north towards Edinburgh when he stepped onto the northbound carriageway and was involved in a collision with a red-coloured Mercedes Sprinter van.

The Scottish Ambulance Service attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

The roadway was closed for around five hours while collision investigations were carried out.

Police are now appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area around the time of this incident and who remember seeing the van and/or the male victim, to get in touch.

Sergeant Andrew Gibb of Police Scotland, said: “Our enquiries into the full circumstances of this incident are ongoing and I am keen to hear from anyone who witnessed this incident.”
