Police are investigating after a significant quantity of electrical cable was stolen in Dalkeith

The theft took place between 9pm on Saturday, May 21 and 7am the following morning from the industrial units at the rear of Newbattle Abbey College.

A wheelbarrow was also stolen from nearby and it is likely this was used to transport the cable away from the area.

The remains of burnt electrical cable were subsequently recovered in Mayfield Industrial Estate, and officers are treating this as linked to the theft.

Inspector John Dryden said: “Those responsible have shown little regard for the businesses affected by their actions.

“Not only this, but the cable was next to a live high voltage wire and could have caused significant injury to those involved in the theft.

“Anyone who may have seen suspicious behaviour in the area around the time of the theft, or who can help with our investigation, is urged to get in touch.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or make an anonymous report through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
