Midlothian Council is making special arrangements for residents of a recently built Bonnyrigg housing development to vote after a ward mix-up.
Those living at Gladstone’s Gait were placed in the Midlothian East ward instead of the Bonnyrigg ward for the last council elections in 2012. While these people will still not be able to vote for the Bonnyrigg ward, they will be free to vote there for the next council elections.
A spokesman for the Returning Officer and Midlothian Council Chief Executive Kenneth Lawrie said: “Voters resident in this development were able to have their say at the last council elections.
“Following the election, it was suggested the development should logically have been in the Bonnyrigg ward rather than Midlothian East.
“Unfortunately, we’re limited in what we can do ourselves by legislation and so the aspect we’re consulting on just now is allowing voters from this area to cast their votes at a place that is closer to them than the polling place they used last time out.”
