Midlothian Council will write to the Scottish Government condemning plans to remove £1.2 million of council tax raised here.
While discussing the council’s financial strategy last week, Councillor Derek Milligan (Lab) called on the council to write to Holyrood regarding the plans to take £1.2 million of the extra £1.7 million expected to be raised in Midlothian and put it into a central education pot. He said: “They should leave council tax well alone to councils to set, to deal with local priorities. I would ask that we condemn the robbery of this £1.2m and demand that any money raised through council tax remains within that council.”
Thanks to Green and Independent councillors’ support the motion was carried by ten votes to eight.
