Local primary schools are benefiting from a scheme which gives young people the chance to gain experience volunteering with children.

Volunteer Centre Midlothian’s Transform Activity Buddy project, which began in January, sees young people help with a range of tasks during lunchtimes and holidays.

St Luke’s Primary School in Mayfield is one of four schools taking part, with 12 more signed up. Young volunteers from Dalkeith High School have been helping out there.

St Luke’s headteacher Lindsey Walker said: “This has been a great success.

“All pupils are eager to participate in the fun and varied activities on offer. We are excited to be part of the project.”
