Pub landlords in the Newbattle area have come together in a bid to tackle trouble-makers on their premises.
‘Newbattle Pubwatch’ involves seven local pubs and clubs in Mayfield, Newtongrange and Easthouses. Since it began last month, a five-year banning order has already been given to one person, preventing them from entering any of the premises signed up to the scheme.
The Dean Tavern’s landlord John Byrn hosted the first meeting last month, he welcomed pubwatch.
He said: “It can only be a good thing. I think defining rules that appear more or less universal is good, so we are all on the same hymn sheet so to speak.
“The first meeting went quite well, a number of publicans attended. It was nice to put a face to the name.
“It’s just a matter of getting to know each other now. It will be interesting for me to go to their pubs.
“It’s so difficult nowadays to deal with people causing trouble in your pub. There is so many laws and regulations.
“We can now maybe avert something happening if we have information about someone and we are forewarned.”
