Pupils from the Newbattle High School feeder primary schools recently took part in a mass bike ride as part of Cycling Scotland’s national Give Everyone Cycle Space campaign.

The campaign asks drivers to give cyclists enough space when overtaking,at least as much space as they would give a car.

Councillor Derek Rosie (SNP), cabinet member for school travel, said: “While the number of Midlothian pupils cycling and scooting to school has increased from 4.5 per cent in 2008 to 12 per cent in 2014, past research has shown that one of the main barriers to more children cycling is parents worrying about allowing their child on busy roads. This smart campaign really helps get the message across that motorists need to leave at least 1.5 metres of space on the road.”
