A RETIRED Midlothian teacher has been honoured for his contribution to education and the community.

Jack Smith, the former head teacher at Paradykes Primary School in Loanhead, was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The 60-year-old retired from the school last summer and now lives in Aberdour, Fife. He is married to Angie and has four grown-up children. For the man known affectionately in Loanhead as Mr Smith, the BEM is a double celebration.

He carried the Olympic torch through Camelon on June 13.

With his old school always in his thoughts, he returned this week to donate his golden Olympic torch to grateful staff and pupils.
