Pupils at Penicuik High are appealing for the return of a ceremonial mace designed and carved by them to celebrate the Commonwealth Games.

The mace, which features symbols of the county such as mining and the Midlothian leaf, is due to go on show as part of a school exhibition. The exhibition has been put on hold until the mace is recovered.

However, the pupils have been left disappointed after the mace appears to have disappeared at the end of the Queen’s Baton Relay celebration in Dalkeith Country Park in June.

Councillor Bob Constable, cabinet member for education, said: “The pupils are desperate to get it back.”
