Midlothian Council wants to encourage as many residents as possible to take part in the Scottish council elections on May 4.

This election will be the first time that 16 and 17 year olds have been able to vote for councillors to represent them on their local authority. However, anyone who isn’t registered to vote won’t be able to take part. The deadline to register to vote in these elections is April 18. Register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or get a paper copy of the registration form by calling the electoral registration office on 0131 344 2500.

Returning officer Kenneth Lawrie said: “Anyone not yet registered to vote should do so as soon as possible so they can have their say on issues that affect their day-to-day lives locally.”
