1964

DALKEITH: Dalkeith Town Council has agreed not to give any assistance to the Kennedy Memorial Appeal. At a Town Council meeting on Monday evening, Provost James Quinn expressed the view that the local people had acted tremendously well in other appeals.

1989

NEWBATTLE: The governors of closure threatened Newbattle Abbey College are being urged to “clear a path to the future” when they meet today to discuss emergency funding proposals. Staff at Newbattle, who are in possession of redundancy notices which take effect on June 30, see the meeting as the most crucial in the college’s 50 year history.

1999

GOREBRIDGE: Councillors have put the blocks on stringent curtailments proposed by senior officials for opencast mining on the outskirts of Gorebridge. The Midlothian Council members argued that the need to get miners back to work was more urgent than technical discrepancies.
