Friday, May 8 - VE Day - Cenotaph Highlights (BBC2, 7.30pm)

At 3pm, many people in the country will down tools to acknowledge the 70th anniversary of the formal end of the Second World War in Europe.

Here, Eddie Butler narrates footage from this afternoon’s service of remembrance which took place at Whitehall in London.

The commemoration was led by the Queen and attended by the leaders of the main political parties, members of the armed forces and representatives of veterans’ groups and charities.

Britain’s Greatest Generation (BBC2, 9pm)

Across Britain, people will be marking the 70th anniversary of VE Day, but the number who can actually remember victory in Europe is dwindling.

This documentary pays tribute to the generation who grew up in the aftermath of the First World War and fought in or lived through the Second World War. Now aged in their 90s and 100s – the oldest person featured is 110 – they come from a variety of backgrounds and many experienced hardships, but they also have positive memories of the Britain in the 1920s and 1930s.

So, when conflict broke out in 1939, these men and women were ready to risk their lives for their country.
