A Roslin man has been shortlisted for the Breaking Down Barriers Award at this year’s national Guide Dogs Annual Awards.

A guide dog mobility instructor with Guide Dogs for 18 years, Gavin Neate became increasingly aware of the dangers faced by the blind and visually impaired when using pedestrian-controlled crossings.

As a result he had designed and developed the Neatebox, a hi-tech proximity device which can be fitted to pedestrian crossing.

The system is activated by an app on a person’s smartphone and can tailor the crossing time to their specific needs – something also helpful to wheelchair and mobility scooter users.

The Neatebox received a commendation in the Use of Technical Innovation category of the 2014 DADI awards in October.
