A town centre pub has been allowed to extend its ‘on sales’ hours until 2am at weekends, despite objections from local residents and the police.

Shopping Mall Limited, owners of The Buccleuch in Dalkeith, obtained permission to vary the premises licence at a meeting of Midlothian Licensing Board last week.

Police Chief Inspector Jim Royan reminded the board that its members had recently designated Dalkeith as being “over provided” in terms of premises licenses in the area.

He added that the pub being licensed for a 15-hour period would exceed the 14 hours currently recommended by the Scottish Government.

Councillor Margot Russell (Lab), who moved to grant the application, told the meeting: “I have no objections to 2 o’clock because there are other places with that licence.”
