Preston Lodge 43-17 Lasswade
Going into this match Lasswade were 3-0 up from previous league encounters including a 36-16 home win in October.
However Preston Lodge’s record to date was eight wins from 14 while their local rivals had only managed four from 15. If ever there was an occasion to lay any bogeys, this was it.
The bogey team theory gained some weight when Lasswade scored the first try within 60 seconds of the kick-of. A penalty from the first breakdown set up a short range lineout and Donald Hearn finished off the catch and drive.
PL had the edge in territory and possession thereafter and going into the second quarter Whittingham found the angle to slice through the Lasswade defence and even up the score and just two minutes later PL showed their own skills at the catch and drive with Hart grounding the ball for a lead of 10-5.
Lasswade were in control in the last ten minutes and a slick handling sequence allowed Kyle Smith to bring the score equal. When Dougie Hearn made a break from half way and offloaded to Billingham in close support it was Smith again that was on hand to finish under the posts. Matt Smith’s conversion took Lasswade into the interval 10-17 ahead.
PL needed nearly 10 minute of the second half to even up the scores again through a try by Walker and a McMann conversion. Lasswade held their line up to the third quarter but lost both their centre to injury in the process and then a yellow card proved crucial. Walker and Hart each added their second tries and McMann another two points during the sin-binning.
PL were totally on top during the last ten minutes allowing Hart to complete his hat-trick and in the final minute Penrose grounded the seventh try with McMann’s conversion closing the scoring.
Lasswade now desperately need some points and a visit to Hawthornden by Hillhead-Jordanhill this Saturday is the next opportunity to reverse their fortunes. Kick-off 2pm.
