Midlothian's mining heritage is to be the focus of a major cycling event – with bikers expected to hit the county's tourist trail as well.
The Megacycle event – a 20 mile leisurely cycle run from Penicuik to Newtongrange on Sunday, May 3 – is one of Midlothian's contributions to Scotland's Homecoming 2009 celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of national bard Robert Burns.
It is being organised by the Midlothian Tourism Forum.
The route, mostly downhill and traffic-free, will take cyclists through parts of the former Lothian coalfield.
"Midlothian is particularly proud of its mining traditions but there's much more to Midlothian than that," said Forum Vice-Chair Quintin Young.
"We're expecting Megacycle and 'Homecoming' to attract visitors from around the world. The cycle event provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the local area as a tourist destination."
