Thieves have targeted community efforts to improve a gateway to Penicuik.

Eight pyramid shaped box hedges have been stolen from planters along Edinburgh Road.

The planters, sited on the main thoroughfare, have been paid for by local councillor Margaret Wilson (SNP) using £10,000 from her environment fund.

Councillor Wilson told the Advertiser: “I am disappointed that this has happened. I am genuinely upset someone did that. They have stolen from the people of Penicuik and I am disgusted anyone would want to do such a mean thing. They have robbed Penicuik – they haven’t robbed me.”

The thieves struck overnight between Monday, November 21, and Tuesday, November 22. Police will write to residents in the vicinity in a bid to jog people’s memories of that night to track down the culprits.
