Construction of Shawfair Station, the first of four in Midlothian to sit along the new Borders Railway line, has begun.
Jim Bryant (SNP), cabinet member for economic development, helped the Borders Railway project team mark the milestone.
His visit followed two months of preparation works to the site.
The project’s main contractors, BAM Nuttall, excavated 500,000 tonnes of soil to make way for the new station.
It is thought that the excavation is the largest of its kind for any new station to be built in recent history, as a result of the historic legacy of the Monktonhall Colliery, where the new station will sit.
