Bonnyrigg Rose began 2016 with a win in this Scottish Cup tie, which only went ahead thanks to a huge effort from everyone at the club.
Lochee United impressed early on as the Rose took longer to get going, with United’s Kirk hitting the home crossbar with a header, and Ruaridh Donaldson having to clear another chance for the visitors off the line.
However, after two pressing Rose corners in 32 minutes just two minutes later Wayne McIntosh headed home the first goal at Bonnyrigg in 2016 following a perfect right wing cross from Ross Archibald to break the deadlock!
A foul on Deesley next saw Donaldson booked in a tousy spell of play which also saw Webster booked for a tackle on Donaldson.
Just before the break it was almost 2-0 when Ross Archibald turned in the penalty area before seeing his shot hit the Lochee crossbar and slip over leaving the Rose just 1-0 ahead at the break.
Lochee were still in it fighting hard with the Rose’s slender lead needing a second cushion goal. And Rose fans only had to wait six minutes into the second half to see that second crucial goal materialise. An excellent Adam Nelson shot saw an equally brilliant tip over save by United keeper Fotheringham. From the resultant corner kick sent in by Nelson Ross Archibald glanced his header craftily into the Lochee net to put Bonnyrigg in the driving seat with their 70th goal of the season.
There was still a long way to go to the finishing line and keeper Mike Andrews’ outstretched leg denied substitute Paul Blackwood what looked a certain goal in 80 minutes, after Alan Horne had to clear the danger following a double corner attack from the Taysiders.
Chances to McIntosh and Turner went abegging too but at the finish Bonnyrigg comfortably enough saw it out with their 10th clean sheet of the season denying Lochee any consolation goal and so advancing Bonnyrigg into the last 16 of the Scottish Cup, and well deserved too.
