LABOUR councillors have called a special council meeting to discuss the removal of ‘market supplement’ payments.
As previously reported in the Advertiser, more than 100 Midlothian Council staff, including bin men and specialist sports instructors, are to lose the special payments they get on top of their hourly rates. They and opposition councillors are furious that this is to be removed without consultation, leaving some with a pay drop of around a third when the new level is introduced on April 21.
The council defended the move saying it brings the affected staff’s pay into line with other local authorities. The issue was to be discussed by the council on May 14 but now the Labour Group has called a special meeting on April 15 to discuss the removal of market supplement payments.
