ONE local school embraced the Olympic spirit long before the achievements of the likes of Jessica Enis, Mo Farah and Sir Chris Hoy enthralled the nation.
Newbattle Community High School signed up for the Olympic programme ‘Get Set Go 2012’ back in 2009, and have since worked closely with organisers LOCOG.
Head of Physical Education at Newbattle Bob Foley recently gave a speech about Olympic values to an audience that included Lord Coe.
Bob was delighted that Newbattle was in the limelight at the recent conference, thanks to their continued involvement in Get Set Go, which among other things saw pupils welcome South African Paralympians to the Olympic park.
He said: “It was nice to be recognised as a school. One of the two in Scotland, for promoting the Olympics and the Paralympics.
“It was great to get the opportunity for our children to shine. To be so far away from London but to be so involved in London 2012 was great too. We were mentioned so many times down there. We are 400 miles away from London but we were right at the heart of that conference and held in high esteem.”
