Newbattle Medical Practice is proposing to significantly reduce its boundary, although existing patients would be unaffected by any changes.
For the benefit of existing patients, the proposed practice area would no longer include Bonnyrigg, which itself has three practices, although all three have shut their lists to new patients in the past year.
Speaking at last week’s Mayfield and Easthouses Community Council meeting, chairman Robert Hogg sympathised with the practice.
He said: “They have 16,000 patients registered. It’s one of the biggest in Midlothian.
“Their area went as far as Lasswade. It’s not feasible for them to continue to register patients from Bonnyrigg.
“The current lack of GPs has now impacted on the practices, as the work increases at the practices in Midlothian on a daily basis.
“It’s a concern, obviously.
“You hear people saying how hard it is to get an appointment.
“Now we know exactly why. They just have too much work to do.”
This boundary proposal comes as the pressure on practices along the A7 corridor continues to grow with increased patient numbers.
Only Newbyres Medical Practice in Gorebridge has not yet made any restrictions on its patient list in the past year.
