Week 16 of the Edinburgh and Lothians Table Tennis League saw Penicuik’s second and third teams clash at Ladywood.
Team two of James Wighton, Gary McDougal and Abby Wighton have found it tough going in Division 1 since they won the Division 2 title last season.
They were in need of a victory to pull them away from the relegation places at the foot of Division 1. Team 3 of Iain Johnston, Brian Bailey and Clive Liddiard sat in a mid table position going into the eagerly anticipated match. When the teams met earlier in the season honours were shared with a 5-5 draw but on that occasion, team three were under-strength.
The first half of the match was extremely one sided and going into the doubles fixture team twolooked in control at 5-1 up. Abby combined with Gary to take on Brian and Iain. The match looked over as Abby and Gary claimed the first two ends 11-8, 12-10 putting them one end away from an unassailable 6-1 lead. There was disbelief as Iain and Brian somehow managed to find their form when most needed and stormed back to win the next three ends to keep the match alive. When Iain defeated Gary team three trailed 5-3 going into the last two matches, Abby v Brian and Iain v James. The experience of Brian saw him defeat Abby and the match was poised at 5-4 to team two. The final match was a classic. James clawed back to level the match 2-2 and it was fitting that an excellent match be concluded by a final end shootout. In a tense finish Iain won the deciding end by the tightest of margins 11-9 to secure a brilliant comeback for team three as they secured a 5-5 draw.
Elsewhere, it was a disappointing week for the Penicuik club with defeats for teams one, six, seven and eight.
