Television - Stand Up To Cancer (Friday, October 19, 7.30pm, Channel 4)

TV is no stranger to charity, or raising awareness of certain issues – but sometimes we can feel slightly detached from them, simply because we have little if no first-hand experience of the issues involved.

But Stand Up to Cancer focuses on a disease that must have impacted on pretty much all of us – whether we’ve survived it, are currently suffering from it, or know people who have or have had it.

Now Alan Carr, Davina McCall and Christian Jessen are about to host a marathon fundraiser they hope will inspire people to hand over the cash needed to help researchers trying to find a cure.

Look Out For: The all-star line-up, which includes Cheryl Cole, Leona Lewis, Derren Brown, David Hasselhoff, The Simpsons, Bradley Cooper, Kylie Minogue (herself a survivor), Tom Daley, Jimmy Carr and Anna Friel, plus many more.

Carr says: “Like so many people, I’ve seen exactly how destructive the big C is. I’ve lost two people already this year to cancer, and a friend of mine who has been diagnosed with throat cancer is having her voice box removed next week, and won’t speak again. So we need to raise a lot of money.”
