Members of a Penicuik sports club are gearing up for the match of their lives – to save their ground from being turned over for housing.

Penicuik Tennis Club has launched a campaign to save the courts at Kirkhill and is to hold a public meeting next month.

Midlothian Council is undertaking a feasibility study looking at building social housing on the land it leases to the tennis club.

Established in 2012, the club has around 200 members.

Club secretary Caroline Wylie said: “This has far exceeded our expectations and is one of the highest tennis club memberships in the East of Scotland. The age range of members is from four to 70.”

There is speculation that the land will be used by Homes for Heroes. Midlothian Council is in talks with the charity but says no site has been identified for such housing.
