More than 500 good boys and girls applied to take on the world’s toughest job and become an official toy tester for Santa.

But only two children could be chosen to put this year’s must have toys including Kinetic Sand, My Little Pony and Crocodile Dentist through their paces in Cameron Toll Shopping Centre last month.

Ellie McCall (6), who attends Rosewell Primary, and Kian Gillon (8), who attends Gracemount Primary School, Edinburgh, had their names drawn out of Santa’s hat and took on the challenge with gusto in the centre’s The Entertainer’s store.

The duo tested 12 toys but both settled on Hatchimals as their number one toy for Christmas.

To thank them for taking on such a highly pressurised position they were each awarded a £35 gift voucher to spend in the top toy store plus an Entertainer goodie bag.

Cameron Toll Shopping Centre manager Jim Riddell said: “We would like to thank all the children who put themselves forward for the two positions. Santa has noted their enthusiasm. Our winner’s toy report has been passed on to him and we have been assured that the Elf Planning Department will use the findings to buy enough nuts, bolts and screws to meet the anticipated demand for Kian and Ellie’s top picks.”

For those wanting to let Santa know in person what they’d like to find under the tree this year, he will take residence in the centre’s grotto every Saturday and Sunday right up until Christmas Eve. Visits to the grotto are free, however, donations to The Sick Kids Friends Foundation would be welcomed.

Princess and superhero fans will also be delighted to learn their favourite characters will be making an appearance throughout the festive period. There will be a hope the princess doesn’t get tangled in our superhero’s web on December 10. Finally, ice princesses will slide in on December 17.
