In recognition of her voluntary work with young people, a Newbattle woman has been selected to carry the Olympic Flame through Loanhead.

An assistant commissioner with the Scouts in Midlothian, Erika Pryde spends much of her free time working with youngsters at Newbattle Parish Church.

A youth leader since the age of 21, the married planning officer at Midlothian Council takes a weekly Sunday School class and also volunteers at a church-run holiday club every summer. Additionally, she has been instrumental in setting up a church group for ‘young adults’ – between the ages of 15-25 – within the parish of Newtongrange.

Speaking to the Advertiser this week, Erika (50), of Newbattle Abbey Crescent, explained that her invite to carry the torch had been a closely-kept secret among friends and workmates.
