A Conservative motion sending the council’s best wishes to Glencorse-based troops heading off on deployments was changed by Labour to include support for retention of the base.

The original Conservative motion was amended by Labour to include that Midlothian Council reaffirms its support for the retention of Glencorse Barracks, set for closure in 2032 under MOD proposals. Conservative councillor Andrew Hardie broke ranks and voted with his SNP and Labour counterparts for the amendment which was passed.

Disappointed Conservative group leader Councillor Pauline Winchester, who grew up in an army family, said: “That’s a separate conversation we can all have another time.”
