FORMER Mayfield councillor Dick Small has died after a long illness.
Mr Small worked as a miner at Bilston Glen and became a union delegate, representing fellow miners, before becoming Labour councillor for Mayfield South.
He was elected in 1982 and retired from Midlothian Council in 2007. Friend and colleague Councillor Peter Boyes said: “His heart and soul was working for the Labour Party and his union, the National Union of Mineworkers. It was his heart and soul until he met and married his beloved Carol, who became his rock. She was the love of his life.”
Councillor Boyes added: “He was very well known and respected. He will be sadly missed by a lot of people.”
A funeral service will be held at Mortonhall on Saturday at 11am.
