Underage drinking

Midlothian police officers heralded the start of the school holidays by targeting underage drinkers on Friday evening.

As part of Operation Esplanade, plain clothes and uniformed officers patrolled hot spots in Bonnyrigg, Loanhead and Penicuik to seek out underage youths in possession or consuming alcohol.

Community Sergeant Michele Lindsay said three youths in Loanhead and three in Penicuik were traced and spoken to about safety and underage drinking by staff from Fast Forward, a voluntary organisation which promotes health and well-being among young people. Sector Inspector Neil Simpson also spoke to the youths in the presence of their parents.
