US visit to Penicuik marks crowning glory

Penicuik’s links with America have been strengthened thanks to research carried out by keen local historians.

The studies, carried out in Midlothian and Maine, reunited Penicuik Children’s Gala Day coronation chair with a direct descendent of one of the original fundraisers.

Earlier this month, Peter Nelson, accompanied by his wife Sandra, visited the historical archives in Penicuik Town Hall with local historical society members Margaret Coull and Sheila Findlay.

Peter’s great-grandmother Mrs Suttie snr was at the forefront in organising the gift of the throne.

Margaret explained the links were first explored in 2006 when Penicuik Historical Society marked the centenary of the gala with an exhibition in the town hall.
