The Bonnyrigg Centre Trust arrived at last week’s council meeting in a carnival mood but left shocked and disappointed by the decision.

More than 50 people joined the trust in a parade from Morrisons to the meeting at Midlothian House (see video).

Reacting to councillors’ decision to choose Bright Sparks as the new occupants of Bonnyrigg Leisure Centre instead of them, Douglas Strachan from the trust said: “We are still reeling from it to be honest, trying to come to terms with it.

“Right up to the last minute we were pretty optimistic because we read the recommendations.

“We put a lot of time and effort into this. We are now re-grouping and considering our next steps.”

Midlothian Council leader Owen Thompson (SNP) said: “We’d like to thank the trust for their time and interest and hope to continue to work with the group in the future.”
