A Loanhead man who recently purchased the war medal of a fallen World War One soldier from the town now wants to trace the recipient’s family.

Retired community policeman and former chairman of Loanhead Gala Day Joe Gilhooley (57), has the medal of Private John Brown of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, who died in France on July 29, 1918, aged 19. John and his family stayed at 32 Clerk Street, now a cars sales site).

Joe, who has a search alert for the word Loanhead on ebay, said: “This email came in saying there was a World War One medal on sale. I’m glad I have brought it back to Loanhead where it belongs. Local history is important to me. The fact that we are now in the centenary time of World War One it’s quite fitting it’s back in the town. If I was able to trace the family I wouldn’t mind giving it back to where it belongs.”
