Waste contract up for grabs

Millerhill: Four contractors have been invited to compete to deliver facilities to treat food waste collected by Midlothian and Edinburgh City councils.

AmeyCespa, Kelda Water Services, Shanks and Viridor Waste Management were shortlisted after submitting questionnaires to the Zero Waste project team. The plant is proposed for a site near Millerhill.

It is expected the contract will be awarded by the end of 2012 and that facilities would be operational by 2015.

A separate procurement process for residual (mixed) waste treatment facilities is likely to start later in the year to be ready for a proposed ban on the disposal of biodegradable waste to landfill in 2017.
