Mavisbank House

The news that Midlothian Council is no longer prepared to financially support Mavisbank House is very disappointing.

Midlothian is rich in history and culture, yet the council appears to do little to maintain or conserve the area’s most precious assets. I can fully understand that at times of austerity there is a need to scrutinise how money is being earmarked, but surely projects of national value need to be given greater significance and security? At the very least, the council should be identifying alternative sources of finance. There is a real danger that Midlothian Council is taking a short term view and cannot see the bigger picture; that by investing in world-class tourism and heritage we can create a sustainable tourism industry in the county which will help diversify the local economy.
