Newly-promoted Kirriemuir Thistle were the visitors to Penicuik Park for the opening game of the league campaign, with Penicuik failing to continue their pre-season promise.
The Angus side were quick out of the starting blocks and applied immediate pressure on the home team. In the sixth minute, they were unlucky when Ross Lunan’s header at the back post crashed back off the crossbar.
That was a statement of intent and the visitors were not to be denied as a solo effort by Ross Sievewright put Kirrie deservedly ahead.
They doubled their lead in the 16th minute when Penicuik failed to cut out another cross into the middle of the box, where Millar headed home.
On the half hour, Penicuik pulled one back – a Guy Kerr cross was partially cleared to the edge of the box where Michael McDermott struck an unstoppable volley into the Kirriemuir net. Just before half time, another Kerr cross was met by McCallum, who attempted an overhead kick, but his effort went narrowly wide.
