Dalkeith Tennis Club’s men’s team lifted the Division 5B title with a 15-3 win over Grange Dyvours 2 in the Dunlop East of Scotland League on Monday.
Only set percentage separated Dalkeith and Mortonhall 2 after the two were tied at the top of the table. Needing ten sets to clinch promotion, and 12 for the title, Dalkeith powered to a 10-2 lead after the second round of matches before Mike Clarke and Ricky Smith picked up the vital 12th set in their 6-4, 6-1 win over Andy Whitelaw and James Meehan to wrap up a fourth successive league title.
Dalkeith had missed a chance to clinch promotion when they lost 10-8 at Mortonhall 2 on Friday. Down 8-4 after the second round, Dalkeith hinted at a dramatic finish when they won the first set in all three final round matches, but fell agonisingly short as the home side held on to keep their own title chances alive.
The boys’ 14 and Under team finished their season on a high with an 8-4 win at North Berwick for their second successive win.
Ryan and Adam Cairns held their nerve in a champions’ tie-break decider to beat Finlay MacFadyen and Hamish Rae 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 while Craig Gallagher brushed aside Eric Gallagher 6-1, 6-0 to give Dalkeith a 4-2 lead after the first round.
Craig Gallagher and Kalum Tocher held off Eric Gallagher and Ewan Bell 7-5, 6-4 before Ryan Cairns secured the win with a 6-4, 6-2 win over MacFadyen. Adam Cairns came so close to adding a fifth win with a tremendous fight back against Rae but, after clawing back from 5-2 down in the second set to force a tie-break, was edged 8-6 in the decider.
Dalkeith’s women’s team can clinch the Division 7B league title with victory in their final match at Braid 4.
