A young footballer from Lasswade is set to live the American dream playing ‘soccer’ while earning himself a university education.

Former Heart of Midlothian Academy starlet Sam Daniel (18), will find himself back in maroon this summer when he begins his new career with the University of Mobile in Alabama.

The Lasswade youngster has been recruited by Mobile Head Coach, Dan Whelan, a British coach who is a former Blackburn Rovers player now living in the United States.

Sam spent last season at Spartans FC after leaving Hearts but saw his long-term career best served by playing ‘soccer’ in America, whilst also studying for a degree in International Business combined with Humanities at the same time.

He said: “The appeal of moving to the University of Mobile and experiencing a different way of playing the game is something that I am excited about.

“I am looking forward to working with players from across the world and improving my game. Things like the year round good weather and the fact that the University of Mobile has outstanding facilities made it an easy decision to make.

“I am also very keen to get a degree behind me as I believe a career outside of the game is very important for football players nowadays.”

The University of Mobile is located in between the US cities of New Orleans and Louisiana and is ranked in the top 10 college soccer programmes in the United States.

Sam joined the University of Mobile from the Sporting Futures USA Program who arranged his scholarship.

Sporting Futures USA’s David Binnie added: “Sam is a very talented footballer and a very intelligent guy.

“He will very much fit the description of a Student Athlete within the US system. He has worked really hard to prepare himself for this life changing career pathway.

“I have very high hopes for him and I look forward to seeing him thrive in the colours of Mobile.”

Sporting Futures USA will be holding a Talent ID Match Event and Information Seminar on July 29 at the University of Stirling. The event is open to players who are currently in S5, S6 or who are about to attend college or university in Scotland. Email- david@sportingfuturesusa.com
