A battling Newtongrange Star went down to an efficient Linlithgow Rose side on Saturday at Prestonfield Park.
Star almost succumbed to the quickest goal of the season when young second choice keeper Dylan Rooney had to look lively to beat away a Ruari MacLennan effort after just 22 seconds. The home side came close again after two minutes when Leiper rose unchallenged to nod the ball wide from inside the six yard box.
Keeper Rooney was in action again after 25 minutes when Tommy Coyne found space in the box and turned Jono McManus inside out. His fizzed an effort low towards the corner but the outstretched fingertips by the Star keeper diverted the effort on to the post.
Star had the ball in the net after 40 minutes when Steven Tulloch fed Renton who prodded in past Adams, but the flag was up for offside.
Linlithgow’s Weir fired in a terrific effort after 54 minutes that went inches wide.
The deadlock was finally broken by the home side after 63 minutes in controversial circumstances. Thomson looked fouled in the middle of the park but no free kick given as the ball was swept out to the left where Strickland rolled the ball across the 18 yard box for Weir to lash the ball home past the helpless Rooney.
The home side should have doubled their advantage after 66 minutes when a corner from the right was met by Thom whose goal bound header was blocked on the line. Strickland followed up but blazed the ball over the bar from four yards.
Linlithgow ended the game as a contest after 81 minutes when a corner was flicked on at the near post to the lurking Coyne who made no mistake from three yards. Late on McManus saw red for moving his head towards Coyne.
