A Midlothian schoolboy has been chosen as one of the two goalkeepers in the Scotland Schools’ team for their upcoming matches.

Ben Mackenzie (17), a sixth year pupil at Lasswade High School, was selected for the U18 Scottish Schools’ football squad for 2015, following trials at Toryglen in Glasgow.

Unlike most of the other players in the squad who play for pro-youth teams, Ben continues to play in goal for his local team, Loanhead MW FC.

He said: “I was immensely proud to be picked for Scotland, I couldn’t believe it when I heard. I was on the bus home from school when my mum and dad both text me to tell me it was on the SFA website.

“It is quite unusual to not be at a pro club. I have been at Loanhead since I was eight, except for a brief spell at Hearts.”
