Midlothian Junior Football Round-up

While Newtongrange Star have no competitive match on Saturday, all four other Midlothian junior clubs are away from home.

Arniston Rangers head to the seaside to visit third-top Dunbar United in the South League for the Gorebridge men’s 20th championship match of the season (Dunbar’s 21st). Dunbar’s 2-1 home win over Harthill last Saturday put them a point ahead of Arniston, although Arniston do have a game in hand.

Arniston conceded their 50th goal of the season in losing 4-0 at home last Saturday to South League toppers Fauldhouse United. Having beaten Dunbar 4-0 at Newbyres Park in January, the Midlothian men are seeking a league double over their East Lothian promotion rivals.

Bonnyrigg Rose head back over the Forth on Saturday to visit Kirkcaldy in a second-round Fife and Lothians Cup tie. The winners will be away to Oakley United in round three. Last Saturday’s Fife visit produced a polished Rose performance, winning 4-0 at St Andrews in the Super League.

Penicuik Athletic are also away from home – for the third week in a row – visiting Newburgh in the second round of the Fife and Lothians Cup. The winners there are set to visit cup holders Linlithgow Rose in the third round.

Meanwhile, Penicuik returned a 3-1 away win at Forfar West End last Saturday to qualify for a second-round East of Scotland Cup tie – again away to fellow Premier League’s Ballingry Rovers. If Penicuik win that, they will be at home to Linlithgow Rose in the third round.

Dalkeith Thistle are still contesting two cup competitions. They have a home tie in the third round of the East of Scotland Cup against either Luncarty or Bo’ness, while Bathgate Thistle’s penalty shoot-out win over visiting Dundonald Bluebell means Dalkeith visit Bathgate in the third round of the Fife and Lothians Cup to be arranged.

This weekend, Dalkeith will be seeking to recover from a crushing 5-0 home defeat last Saturday in the Premier League to Ballingry Rovers by taking a league trip to Armadale Thistle, whom they beat 2-0 at King’s Park in February.

Newtongrange Star will contest the final of the South League Cup against holders Linlithgow Rose at Broxburn’s Albyn Park on Saturday, May 4, the day before Star’s AGM at their club which begins at 11am.

An excellent 3-1 home victory for Newtongrange Star over visiting Super League’s Camelon Juniors in the second round of the East of Scotland Cup sees Alan Miller’s now in the third round of the top cup, drawn at home to another Super League side, Lochee United, who last Saturday won their own second round tie at home by 2-1 over Dundee Violet.
