Penicuik’s persistence
ultimately merited their hard fought victory over Scone Thistle to step forward to the fouth round of the Scottish Junior Cup.

Scone put up a commendable fight of it only to see a single first half Penicuik goal on the stroke of half time and a second very late goal sealing Penicuik’s victory and send Thistle out of the Scottish Junior Cup at Penicuik Park last Saturday.

Firm favourites for the win Penicuik’s club officials worked hard on the ground on the Saturday morning to ensure the game went ahead.

A good start by Penicuik put the visitors under early pressure but an early breakthrough eluded them.

It took Scone fully eight minutes to mount an attack with Thistle’s Ben Moffat shooting too straight at home keeper Youssef Bejaoui.

On 10 minutes a Kyle Scott shot was well saved by the Thistle keeper.

Penicuik continued to dominate but their pressing corners found a resolute Scone defence well organised.

On 27 minutes a raging shot by Thistle’s Sean Fergus nearly surprised the home crowd as it flew inches past Bejaoui’s right hand post.

However in the 45th minute Penicuik broke the dealock when a cross from Ross Montgomery was headed home by Ryan McCallum to put the hosts in front 1-0 at half time.

Scone made a double
substitution on the restart and in 55 minutes a goalline clearance by Andy Forbes thwarted Thistle.

A better Penicuik move on 65 minutes involving Scott and then Barr saw the latter denied by a blocking save on Winton’s chest before Penicuik brought on Ryan Gay.

Stevie Noble was booked for a foul on Thistle’s Njie and the resultant free kick hit the Penicuik post and bounced away to safety.

In the 86th minute Penicuik finally scored a second hard earned goal when Ryan Gay’s right wing cross was netted by Keith Lough to finally get Penicuik home and dry.
